Middlesex provided civil, site, and structural improvements for Amtrak’s installation of 26 miles of second track between Hamden and Windsor, CT. Construction included the rehabilitation or replacement of approximately 20 bridges and culverts most of which were historically significant and protected.

The project also included improvements at seven roadway grade crossings, the setup/control/maintenance of Waste Stockpile Areas for the handling and disposal of hazardous material generated during the course of construction, and the maintenance and protection of existing utilities including the recently installed Amtrak and Level 3 rail communications. New retaining walls were constructed throughout the project that included gravity wall, mechanically stabilized earth, and soldier pile types.

There were 30 weekend rail traffic outages for cross track work were scheduled which required Amtrak force account crews to remove track, Middlesex to construct the improvements, and Amtrak to re-install the rail and open for rail traffic within a 32-hour closure period. Track was placed into service on time for all outages. Middlesex crews coordinated closely with Amtrak and adjacent CTDOT contracts at the NHHS stations and CTfastrak busway Project. Rail service along the adjacent active track was maintained throughout construction, except during scheduled outages.

Middlesex value engineered a number of retaining wall foundations to eliminate the risk of damaging the ballast within the zone of influence and simplify access needs and constructibility. Drilled shafts were replaced with pipe piles and H-piles grouted into the upper portion of each pipe pile.
