Littleton, MA — The Middlesex Corporation was awarded the Arthur Gruhn Excellence in Construction award for its work on the rehabilitation of the Rochambeau Bridge project in Connecticut. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), the agency who owns the project, presented the award to members of Middlesex team at the Connecticut Road Builders Association’s 90th Anniversary Dinner in Plantsville, CT.
The project consists of the rehabilitation of Bridges 01218 and 04180 (collectively called the “Rochambeau Bridge”), which carry I-84 over the Housatonic River. There were multiple components included in the overall project some of which included:
- Installation of platform trestles and highway cross overs for staged construction
- Superstructure demolition
- Replacement of the existing superstructures with new steel multi-girder superstructures
- Construction of pier caps extensions and access roads
In addition, the project required work in the river that leveraged work trestles and barges. A minimum 75’ channel width for boaters was always maintained, except for major demolition and steel erection work. Over the course of the project, Middlesex worked closely with state and federal agencies that included the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), US Coast Guard and the Lake Zoar Authority for relevant approvals.
“Middlesex is proud to lead impactful infrastructure projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Rochambeau Bridge, which improve and extend the value of core transportation-based highways and bridges,” said Thomas Grondine, Senior Vice President, Preconstruction at Middlesex. “And to be recognized for our collective team efforts by industry experts makes the work that much more satisfying.”
