Selmon Expressway Construction of East Slip Ramps project recognized for improving transportation infrastructure
Littleton, MA — The Middlesex Corporation earned the “Expressway Project of the Year” award for its work to improve flow and safety on the Selmon Expressway. The Transportation Expressway Authority of Florida (TEAMFL) selected Middlesex for the prestigious honor and recognizing the contributions from 50+ year old heavy civil construction company and its efforts in helping to maintain Florida’s transportation infrastructure.
The project, initiated by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA), consisted of installing new East Slip Ramps along Interstate 75 and two sets of Reversible Express Lanes (REL). In addition, it was necessary to widen select bridges which were in compact and narrow spaces. With this challenge, Middlesex opted for an innovative tool known as a Mi-Jack which allows for multiple and necessary functions within a reduced footprint. The Mi-Jack also allows for more efficient construction and less impact for drivers. Middlesex also deployed H-pile foundations so that smaller equipment could be leveraged between bridges.
“The Selmon Express East Slip Ramps project was a project that allowed Middlesex to execute on its established reputation as a reliable, knowledgeable, and valuable construction contractor,” said Neil Mulrooney, Senior Vice President, Construction at Middlesex Corporation. “In doing so we were able to deliver a solid and impactful end product by using technology and equipment suited to the needs of the project. In the end, we provided a solution that met the expectations of THEA and all in a collaborative ‘Safety first,’ environment while at the same making a positive contribution to the regional communities.”
Mulrooney added, “We are honored that our work has been recognized by such well-known industry organizations as the FTBA and TEAMFL.”
