Niantic River Bridge Replacement - Middlesex Corporation

Niantic River Bridge Replacement

Niantic, CT
National Railroad Passenger Corporation (AMTRAK)

An outdated bascule bridge carrying AMTRAK’s northeast corridor across the inlet to Niantic Bay was replaced with a new bascule.

A new two track single leaf bascule was constructed 58′ south of the existing outdated bascule bridge. Temporary cofferdams were installed to construct the bridges foundations within the bay. New approach track bed and track was installed to shift rail traffic to the new bridge alignment. This included installation of new caternary structures for the electrified rail. The southern approach is located directly adjacent to Niantic bay, precast sheets and buried rip-rap were installed to protect the tract from storm damage. At the completion of work the beach was rehabilitated to original condition.
