Middlesex recieved both the highest qualifications phase and technical phase scores from FDOT for this design-build project, reinforcing the strong working relationship with FDOT. Continually striving to add value for our clients, twenty one alternative technicals were submitted and thirteen were approved.

The second phase of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Transit System, SunRail, extends service from the Sand Lake Road Station in Orlando to the Poinciana Station in Poinciana. The project is turn-key, including stations, communication systems, bridge reconstruction, drainage, and signal upgrades. A Vehicle Storage and Light Maintenance Facility (VSLMF) was also included.

The new line crosses three waterways requiring construction or reconstruction of rail bridges.

Scope of Work

Design and construction of track, communications system, civil, structural, and roadway.
Design and construction of a Vehicle Storage and Light Maintenance Facility (VSLMF).
Construction of four commuter rail stations, including parking and bus circulation.
All track removal, track upgrades, track realignment and new track required for the facility, including its access to/from the mainline track.
Construction of new bridges and replacement of existing bridge structures.

Unique Challenges

All work was coordinated with future contracts for Wayside Signal and Grade Crossing Warning Systems, and Positive Train Control.
Rail service on the adjacent Central Florida Rail Corridor was maintianed throughout construction.
Develop a phasing plan to put stations into revenue service as each was completed.
